Brazil - Group Project

Arrival

You will be welcomed at the airport on the weekend before your project start date by your host family or a representative from the local office. 

Orientation

At your cross-cultural orientation; you will discuss with your coordinator your first impressions of your accommodations and the life here. Other topics like health and security measures, Brazilian cultural aspects, transportation systems and conditions, staff to contact in case of emergencies, procedures regarding classes, volunteer work, do's and don’ts and general issues will be also be covered in this meeting. An orientation packet with useful information will be given to you at this time.

Language Courses
Your Portuguese course will take place during the first two weeks of the program (some other students may join the class if in the same level or not). You will have 15 hours of class. 

Besides the classes, your foreign language skills are expected to improve quickly as you go places, talk with people, watch films, plays and live a colloquial life. In some cases, the volunteer project may coincide with the language classes, which will allow the volunteer a good opportunity to begin to use the language.

Accommodation
During your program your living arrangements may vary from a Brazilian host family, to a hostel or on site at the project depending on your project.  All the possibilities provide an excellent way to learn about our way of life and to practice Portuguese.  Brazilians have a reputation for being warm and fun-loving, making it easy for you to feel right at home.  We will keep in touch with you throughout your stay to ensure that you have a rewarding experience.

Volunteer Service
The next day after your arrival orientation you will be introduced to your project. You will be informed about your working schedule and the schedule for your Portuguese classes will be determined.  During your first weeks you will be working, learning a new language and also adapting to a new environment.

Education

Fundação Vidal Ramos - Florianópolis
A philanthropic entity was founded in 1958.  They provide education for adults, but the project's main efforts are directed toward assisting kids from age 6 to age 16 who go to public school. Vidal Ramos provides the opportunity to learn a second language, play sports, dance and learn how to use a computer.

Organização Rural Ecologica - ORE - Monte Alegre do Sul
ORE has several projects running with kids and teenagers from 5 to 15 years to learn professional skills, and start working.  They also provide support to adults, especially women.  Courses focus on themes geared to the needs of the community - alcoholism, adolescent sexuality, family harmony and other important topics. 

ADUS - São Paulo 
The ADUS mission assists asylum seekers and refugees to integrate into Brazilian society.  Moreover, ADUS performs various actions aimed at raising awareness and reducing cases of prejudice against refugees and asylum seekers.
Volunteers can provide training workshops (e.g. English, computer and job market), give English and Spanish classes for under privileged communities in São Paulo, or even volunteer in areas of management.

Crea+ - São Paulo
Every Saturday morning Crea+ offers public school students classes in Mathematics and Sociocultural Activities and Sports (arts, sports, cooking etc.)
Volunteers can provide training workshops (e.g. English, computer and job market), give English and Spanish classes for under privileged communities in São Paulo, or even volunteer in areas of management.

Fundação Francisca Franco - São Paulo
The Fundação Francisca Franco is a welfare foundation with 56 years of experience working with children, teens, pregnant teens and mothers who are at. 

Volunteers can work with language classes, tutoring and professional training workshops as well as with recreational and fun activities for the children.

Social Services in Florianopolis
Casalar Emaus - Florianopolis 
The Casalar Emaus is a shelter for boys from 7 to 18 years old.  Since it’s founding in 1993 more than 50 boys have lived there temporarily, are adopted by other families or remain at the project until they reach 18 years of age.

Casa Lar Nossa Senhora do Carmo - Florianopolis
Established in the 1980's, this foster home provides a bridge to a new life.  The home is currently hosting 26 kids in the process of adoption or family reconciliation. All meals, housing, education and psychological supports are provided.

Saúde Criança - Florianopolis
This project started in Rio de Janeiro and was expanded to Florianopolis.  The goal is to assist kids who are at risk. The project evaluates all the things that affect a child’s health (housing, education, family health, family income etc. ) and comes up with a family plan to overcome poverty.

Associação Communitária Monte Azul
Founded in 1979, a non-governmental organization comprised of three centers on the southern outskirts of São Paulo.  The organization promotes human development through education, health, culture, environment and social welfare. There are 14 programs that currently benefit approximately 5,000 people.

Fundação Julita
A non-profit, non-government organization who serves about 1,200 people in its programs to serve children, youth and families in situations of social vulnerability through social and educational activities that promote citizenship. 

Volunteers may work in a variety of areas - marketing, communications, training and workshops, administration, information etc.

Fundação Gol De Letra
Founded in 1998 by former Brazilian footballers serves approximately 1,300 children and youth with art, culture, communication, sport, leisure, citizenship and education for work activities. 

Morungaba
People from many different realities meet at Morungaba through projects and activities like dance, capoeira and theater games. The social inclusion activities take place at the headquarters in the neighborhood called Pinheiros, and in public spaces - all with the support of volunteers and partnerships with universities, civil society and government. 

Morungaba assists vulnerable and at risk children and adolescents from birth to age 17.  The programs aim to promote the return of children and adolescents to family and community life. 
Volunteers become involved in educational activities, tutoring and recreational programs for children.

TETO
Teto is an organization present in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the joint action of residents and volunteers, TETO seeks to overcome the poverty in which millions of people in poor communities find themselves. 

Since 2006 1040 emergency homes have been built with families living in the cities of Guarulhos, Suzano, São Paulo, Itapeva, Taboao da Serra, São Vincente, Osasco, Carapicuíba, Santo André, Embu, Cajamar, among others.

Volunteers are needed to help in the administrative office, to help raise funds for the projects and to participate in construction activities.

Liga Solidária
Develops social programs for children, youth and adults living in areas of high vulnerability.  Today 3,200 people benefit directly and about 13,600 benefit indirectly from the programs of Liga Solidária. 

Volunteers may work in a variety of areas.
